REQUESTING SUPPORT FOR A REPRODUCTION OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PERIODICALS OF THE METHODIST HOLINESS MOVEMENT:
DIVINE LIFE AND INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITOR OF SCRIPTURAL HOLINESS.
(1878-1889 Edited by Dr. Asa Mahan and Dr. Asbury Lowrey.)
See Vol. 1. No. 1., Vol. 1. No. 2., Vol. 1. No. 3., Vol. 1. No. 4.
To all who are sympathetic to historic holiness within the Methodist and higher-life circles,
Over the last 10 years we have been progressively working on reproducing rare revival and holiness sermons and texts, even as these works had occasioned our conversion and had influenced us more importantly than any living witness today. We started out with Charles G. Finney's works (which are fairly complete now) and the early Oberlin authors who were united in spirit with Wesleyan perfection and second blessing holiness experience. Then we began the John Fletcher project (which is ¼ complete, but not edited throughout), and many miscellaneous works according to personal interest and need.
Then we saw a very important figure who is virtually forgotten. Asa Mahan, who most impressively was the first President of Oberlin College 1835-50, Cleveland University (1850's), and Adrian College (1860's), the author of at least 18 spiritual, philosophical and historical classics, the editor of 5 periodicals, a top rate philosopher, educator, reformer, evangelist and pastorwho even advised Lincoln during the civil war, and gave the first woman, as well as the first black women a liberal college education. But Mahan must be remembered for his great influence upon the holiness movement. All living in his day, having the blessed experience of holiness, recognized him as one of the most important leaders of the higher life movementand as exemplifying it most gracefully. Many more details could be added to attract us to this fascinating personage whose life spanned the 19th century 1800-1889.
We have begun to reproduce his entire works, having completed most of his spiritual classics, including his lengthy Autobiography (adding an important index), as well as a few of his philosophy texts (recently finishing his 1000 page Critical History of Philosophy (these works are available in print, online: http://truthinheart.com and on our CD). We have also reproduced several of his commentaries and miscellaneous doctrinal essays.
Some years back we discovered Freedom and Grace: The Life of Asa Mahan. By Edward H. Madden and James E. Hamilton. Metuchen, New Jersey: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 1982. 273 pp. This lead us to discover more lost or rare works of Mahan. We thus traveled to Adrian College to photograph the entire "Notebook" that he left there. It contains writings on doctrinal, philosophical and Constitutional subjects, and is some 250 pages of difficult hand written notes.
But much more importantly we learned of a rare periodical that he edited in his last years while in England: Divine Life (1878-1889). For some years we desired to even just see these writings, but being so rare we had to wait. We did not even know of the size, and when we arrived at Drew University we were pleasantly surprised to find more than we were able to have time to copy. We have some of the earlier periodicals that Mahan had edited and contributed to: The Oberlin Evangelist, and Oberlin Quarterly Review, and will be working on these for some years to come. But this is by far the most import, as it deals with the most important subject to the church: The Divine Life. We have many books that people have desired us to begin or finish scanning, editing, and publishing, but we feel compelled to let them all wait until this work can be tackled and given our full-time attention over the next year or so. Even the remaining volumes of Fletcher's works are seen to be of less importance.
Before we give more details about Divine Life and International Expositor, we would like to give more details about our ministry. We are aiming for 100% accuracy, and do not wish to change either the italics or the spelling of the original texts we reproduce (except for the typos). We have sometimes had do type these classics when scanning took more time due to warn, faded, or darkened pages. But most of our copying comes from scanning, and then we go through three processes of editing each text against the original. Many of our texts are not finished but are available for viewing in an incomplete edition, but among the many books completed we have finished two very large volumes which also have small print: Finney's Unabridged 1851 London Edition of Systematic Theology (1156 pages), as well as Mahan's Critical History of Philosophy (989 pages, which took us a year to painstakingly edit). These can be examined for the kind of accuracy we are hoping to achieve with Divine Life (which will be the equivalent to 7000 pages of a regular reading bookperhaps four times the size of Critical History).
We have produced about 45 books and the same number of booklets (some of which are our own writings), all of which are available on our CD and online. By providence we received an order from Dr. James Hamilton (above noted biographer of Mahan) who later warmly received us into his home, and showed us more of his research. As one of the most important scholars of Mahan, he pointed out a few of what he considered to be his best productions. We took him up on his suggestions, and right away made one of them available: Teachings of the Spirit (which can be seen on our web site). He further introduced us to former president of Asbury Seminary: Dennis F. Kinlaw, as well as Librarian William Kostlevy, who were both excited with this ministry and the prospect of reproducing Divine Life, etc. Over the last two years we have received orders from pastors and scholars of various schools, and most have been very satisfied with our ministry when we try and personally adapt it according to individual requests. We work with a laser printer and digital files, and this gives us much flexibility. We have always tried to give away our productions at as low a cost as is possible, and have largely funded it with our own other incomes. Thousands of hours and dollars have gone into these multifaceted operations which we did not expect to receive back. Along the way many have suggested ways in which we could make money out of this ministry, but our ethic has always been to rather serve the Christian community in such a way as we would wish others to serve us. We have refused the prospect of making a profit in any kind of workespecially the ministryand have only expected a wage to be suitable for the work done. Our mission is to give rather than get, even as it is more blessed to do so. The more we can give the happier we are. And we try and give whatever we can in this ministry as we can afford it.
We do not therefore request support for any other reason, than that the Christian community can obtain this priceless possession free of charge. We will make it available for all to view in all public formats: online, in print, and on CD. There it shall be also fully indexed for searching and scholarly research and personal edification. We shall give it our greatest efforts, even as it is most important to us personally, and as it is very important historically.
However, due to the fact that we have many responsibilities in sustain this ministry and our family we do not see how we can give this great project the attention and accuracy it needs unless we are funded for our time and expenses. We are therefore appealing to the holiness community to sponsor this benevolent project so that their people might be inspired by the very movement that was the foundation. We have completed the first issue (24 pages in small print) and ask for your support to republish close to 4000 pages (small print) of this wealth of inspiration. It is as the breath of heaven to read! Perhaps few Christians could read through all of these writings and neglect to experience the divine fullness of the Spirit. Nothing could be so compelling, as this is the heart and the gold of enlightened saints in the midst of revival. They really leave us no room for doubting God's promises, and experiencing His fullness. With support we can aim towards finishing it by fall 2003.
It will be seen below that we are not just dealing with the writings of Dr. Asa Mahan and Dr. Asbury Lowrey the editors, but with numerous authors and lay-advocates during this time. Such men as Daniel Steel, who later became editor after Mahan's death, Hudson Taylor, Moody, Dr. Palmer, Booth, etc., are frequently mentioned in their ministries, and whose writings graced the pages. There is also short quotes by a great multitude of people throughout history. There is so many angles taken on holiness in this periodical that it is difficult to mention all of them. Books are given short reviews, others are recommended, poems on holiness are included in each edition, as well as numerous revival accounts all over the world are added to the many holiness teachings, inspirations, and considerations.
Out of our present reach, we notice that this periodical was called Divine Life and Missionary Witness for a short while before Mahan and Lowrey took it over. We are not aquatinted with the details yet. But the following details are given in the WorldCat directory:
Divine life and missionary witness, July, 1876 to April, 1877: complete in one volume / Charles Graham; George Savage 1877 English Book iv, 530 p.; 28 cm. [London]: Haughton & Co., Year: 1877 Description: iv, 530 p.; 28 cm. Language: English Contents of issues of Divine life, a weekly non-denominational newsletter, from June 29, 1876-April 26, 1877./ Includes index.
Then Divine Life starts in June 1878, ends volume I in Dec. 78, while continuing the same line of issues (issue number 7.) in Jan. 79, but then starting a new vol. II (issue 7. even though there was no vol. II. 6.) in the same month. These continue until Mahan's deaththe last edition being in June or July of 1889. These started out as 20 page booklets (with 4 outer cover pages with small print reviews, advertisement, etc.) and then ended up as 28 pages (with 4 of the same cover pages). We notice further. These were published every month and are between 3500 and 4000 pages approximately (and would be the size, as we said, of 7000 regular text size pages or more).
We did not mention above that Divine Life continued to be a missionary witness, as will be noted in its frequent space given under the section called 'Intelligence.' For example, you will notice in the first issue (enclosed) that the first revival camp meeting in India was mentioned. But Divine Life was also a Bible Expositor. And that was the name it took after Mahan's death (where other editors took over with Lowrey). The following is also listed under the WorldCat listing, and is also housed entirely in the Drew historical archives:
Divine life and Bible expositor. Publication: [S.l. : s.n.], Year: 1887-1896 Description: Vol. 13, no. 2 (Aug. 1889)-v. 27, no. 2 (Aug. 1896); 15 v. ; 26 cm.
We have enclosed the first issue of the first volume so that you can see what we propose to produce: Vol. 1. No. 1.This was the actual size of the periodical. The text was often very small in some of the Intelligence, advertisement, and book notices. We would like to keep it that size as we produce our books in that format (although our text is bigger), but we are open to make it half-legal-size instead (7 inches instead of 5.5 wide).
The materials will be available as individual booklets, and as whole yearly volumes (hard and soft cover)the first and last year being half the size as the rest. They will receive an ISBN and bar code, as some of our books have, for the entire volume, but obviously not for each issue. Each issue will be available for around $0.80$1.00 each. They will be available in any quantities, and as soon as we get to them in their order. It will only be the bound volumes that will have to wait until we are finished with the year end issue. We will put a nicely designed dust cover on each hard copy, along with a more detailed index than what is provided already. It will depend upon the support given, just how much indexing we can afford to do. We do have the ability to index subjects and individuals mentioned within all the writings, and not just of the articles themselves. This is an important addition to any historical reference, but we know just how consuming it was with other volumes we have done this with (see Mahan's Autobiography and Critical History of Philosophy for such examples). Again, we are open to suggestions and supporting in this way. Beyond these basics we leave it up to the holiness people and historically interested community to make suggestions and give direction to this project.
Before we list a relatively small sample of the articles and correspondence given in this periodical, we will close here with our contact information. But before that, we will mention that we will be interested in any other works you might be interested in us working on in the futureany that would be important for the Christian community in this day.
We will be traveling this next year to visit various schools and churches, and if it is needed, we can try to visit you. Thank you for your time, consideration, and support.
